We are innovating
sustainability through chemistry
In the race against climate change, Flemish academic expertise and industrial experience come together at CATCO2RE

At first glance, CO2 may appear to be waste, but at CATCO2RE we think otherwise. With our pioneering chemistry, we want to solve one of the biggest scientific challenges of our time: to transform waste CO2 into starting material for the production of fuels and chemicals.
Our goal is to produce methane and methanol, fuels and value-added chemicals, using recycled CO2 and solar hydrogen. We will assemble different technologies in a multifunctional and versatile device for methane production: the methanator. We seek a circular solution to reshape the current industry toward a CO2-neutral economy.
Our research focuses on

Renewable hydrogen
Our clean tech system consists of photoelectrochemical cells, which are devices that use only solar energy to produce molecular hydrogen (H2) out of water. The goal is to become a sustainable alternative to the current hydrogen industry, which produces 99% of its H2 by reforming fossil fuels.
Catalyst design
One of the biggest scientific challenges of our time is to enable the use of CO2 as a building block for chemical synthesis. Only the development of new catalysts has the potential to overcome the current limitations of chemical processes, improving the production of carbon-based chemicals and fuels

The methanator: All the technologies in one device
We plan to design a versatile, modular, and decentralized system for producing methane fuel. The methanator is an all-in-one device that integrates every technology developed at CATCO2RE
